Miami International Music Academy
Piano Masterclass

Tian Ying

The Miami International Music Academy presents international pianist Tian Ying in a masterclasses for The Academy piano students. "Perfection is an elusive goal in music - insight, intent, and realization become one, just for now, and that's what Tian Ying at his best achieved!" reported Richard Dyer of The Boston Globe.  Winner of many prestigious awards, including high honors at the Eighth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1989, Tian Ying has become well known for his eloquent, poetic, dramatically intense performances. With his reputation for unusually searching and profound interpretations played at the the highest level of virtuoso accomplishment, Ying has earned a distinguished place among today's most exciting, original and accomplished artists of his generation.

Tian Ying has appeared with numerous orchestras, such as the Rochester Philharmonic, Louisville Orchestra, Chicago Sinfonietta at Orchestra Hall, Fort Worth Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Augusta Symphony, Pennsacola Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, Shanghai Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, among others. Solo recitals have taken Tian Ying across North America, Europe, and from Casablanca to Seoul, and he frequently conducts master classes in universities and colleges around the country.   Engagements for the upcoming seasons include concerto appearances with the Jacksonville Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Bremerton Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Fort Collins Symphony, Spokane Symphony, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Marin Symphony, Lake Charles Symphony, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León of Spain, and recitals in California, Washington, Texas, Florida , Kentucky and many others.

Tian Ying's 1997 recital at Jordan Hall sponsored by the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts was hailed by The Boston Globe as follows: "Ying is at the pinnacle of pianism! In the first major piano recital of the season, Tian Ying set the bar unimaginably high.  If we are lucky, others will play as well; no one is going to play better... Ying is an imaginative storyteller, and landscape painter, tireless, passionate - and tasteful. And in Tian Ying's hands, a black box filled with hammers and strings becomes a treasure hoard of glints and colors."   Paul Griffiths of The Times (London) praised Ying's playing as "the most fascinating experience. . ."  John von Rhein of the Chicago Tribune wrote: "Ying has individual ideas; he can clearly do anything he wants at the piano. But he is far too intelligent and sensitive to waste his big technique on superficial display. There is an integrity to his pianism that commands respect." Tian Ying's 1993 Bank of Boston Celebrity Series concert was chosen as one of the Top Ten in classical music events by The Boston Globe. There have been many articles written about Tian Ying, including profiles in The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, and  People Magazine.

Born in Shanghai and educated in the U.S., Tian Ying made his first public appearance with the Shanghai Symphony at age 10. He attended the Interlochen Arts Academy and the New England Conservatory of Music where he was a Presidential Scholar and a student of the celebrated pianist Russell Sherman. He is a piano faculty at the Frost School of Music at University of Miami.

The Academy is a free  program of the Miami International Music Academy that accepts 7 pre-college gifted piano students and exposes them to a variety of masterclasses with international artists as well as musicianship classes.
