Catherine Lan (Guest Artist)

Recognized as a child prodigy, Dr. Catherine Lan made her first international debut at the age of eight, performing in Japan following her winning at the Junior Original Composition International Composition Competition. Since then, she has appeared as soloist with orchestras including Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Sinfonia of the North Shore, British-Columbia Chamber, University of British-Columbia Symphony, Fifth Avenue Chamber, Braddell Heights Symphony, Frost Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Palm Beach Atlantic Symphony, Broward Symphony, and Edmonton Symphony. She has also concertized with Naples Philharmonic, Atlantic Classical, Pianos Galore Ensemble, Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia Chamber Players, Chrysalis Chamber Players, Southwest Florida Symphony, and Palm Beach Symphony. Dr. Lan gave her harpsichord debut in Coral Gables performing Bach’s Concerti for three harpsichords with Bergonzi String Quartet in 2006, and collaborated as a soloist with distinguished artsts James Buswell and Carol Ou performing Beethoven Triple Concerto in 2013.

Dr. Lan has been the winner of numerous competitions including the 2010 Taiwan Classical Music Society Young Star Audition, 2005 University of Miami Concerto Competition, the 2001 Golden Key International Honour Society Performing Arts Showcase Award, the 2001 Canadian Broadcast Corporation National Debut Competition, the 2000 University of British-Columbia Concerto Competition, the Grand Prize winner of the 2000 Richmond Festival Gala Showcase Concert, and the nationwide Concours de Musique du Canada in 1999 and 2000. Dr. Lan has been featured at Becon TV “On Stage with Iris Acker”, Fu-Hsin Broadcasting Station, WLRN-Public Television “Beethoven & Mas” program and “Beethoven Universal TV” series, and has been the recipient of many scholarships and prestigious awards including the 2007 Provost's Graduate Student Travel Award, 2006 Duane Wilder Award for Excellence in Harpsichord Playing, 2004 Vancouver Foundation Advanced Arts Study, the 2002 Vancouver Women’s Musical Club, the 2002 Burnaby Clef Society, the 2002 Shean Piano Competition in Edmonton, Alberta, the 1999 Yamaha prize from Canadian Music Competition, and the 1989 Yamaha Electone Festival. Her highly acclaimed live solo recital at CBC was broadcast with CBC Radio’s “Westcoast Performance” Debut series in January 2002.

Dr. Lan studied under the tutelage of Ivan Davis, and has received master classes from distinguishing musicians including Edward Auer, Jean-David Coen, Marc Durand, Leon Fleisher, Jay Gottlieb, Phillipe Entremont, Anton Kuerti, Andre Laplante, Stephane Lemelin, Seymour Lipkin, Jon Kimura Parker, Rebecca Pennys, John Perry, and Jean-Paul Sevilla.

Earned her B.M (University of British-Columbia), M.M. (Indiana University Bloomington), and D.M.A (University of Miami), Dr. Lan is a life time member of the Golden Key International Honour Society for academically excellent scholars.

Dr. Lan's previous teaching appointments include Indiana University and University of Miami as the faculty member of Piano department and Music Theory/Composition department. She not only conducted master classes in the USA, Singapore and Thailand, but also served as a staff pianist at Bowdoin International Music Festival and Stringendo Summer Festival, and as the Head Academic Consultants with The Orange Labs (Singapore).

Dr. Lan is currently on faculty at Palm Beach Atlantic University and Broward College, and is the principal keyboardist at Atlantic Classical Orchestra.

The Academy is an outstanding tuition-free program of the Miami International Music Academy that accepts 7 pre-college gifted piano students and exposes them to a variety of masterclasses with international artists as well as musicianship classes.
